We live in the overwhelming world of busy entrepreneurs and parents, where reactivity often reigns supreme.
Days are filled with a cascade of emails, meetings, and kids constantly vying for your attention. The familiar refrain: “Mom! Mom! Mom!” echoes in your ears and you’re caught in a whirlwind of overstimulation and stress.
Before you know it, you’re reacting, yelling at the kids and putting out fires.
As entrepreneurs (especially those that are moms, too), we often take on multiple roles and responsibilities, leaving us feeling overwhelmed and guilty about the way we’ve handled things.
If you’ve ever felt like your responsibilities are just too much and stuck in this cycle of reaction, you’re not alone. This week I’m sharing practical strategies to reclaim your time, reduce stress, and shift from reactivity to intentionality in both your personal and professional life.
Understanding Reactivity vs. Intentionality
Reactive Responses Are Natural
Reactivity is built into our subconscious; it’s impulsive and instinctual.
When we receive an email, a question from our team, or a message from our partner, our immediate response often comes from a place of habit rather than thoughtful consideration. This knee-jerk reaction can lead to emotional heightened responses, like anger or frustration, making us feel controlled by our circumstances.
"Operating from a reactive state makes everything feel heavier and harder. We can easily spiral into negative thoughts and feel overwhelmed."
I recently experienced this firsthand when I recorded an entire podcast episode, only to realize afterward that I hadn’t hit the record button! I found myself frustrated that I had wasted time, but then instantly pulled back to gratitude for the space in my day to be able to have a second chance because of the space in my schedule.
And I think that's something important that we have to always remember in entrepreneurship.
Being an entrepreneur is a privilege. I believe that when we run our businesses with intentionality, we get to truly create the lives that we want. And it's only when we forget that we have the power to control our circumstances, that we have the power to control our reality, that things don't feel intentional.
So in that moment of frustration, I was reminded of a powerful lesson: the importance of moving from a state of reactivity to intentionality in our lives and businesses.
Intentionality Is A Skill
Intentionality is about purpose and thoughtfulness.
It involves taking a moment to process information and respond from a place of clarity. It requires conscious awareness and careful consideration, allowing us to filter our responses rather than react out of habit.
By being intentional, we can foster better relationships, improve our decision-making, and ultimately create a more sustainable business and life. It’s essential to remember that we have the power to control our reality and make choices that align with our values and vision.
4 Steps to Cultivate Intentionality
These actionable strategies will enable you to clarify your vision, identify your core values, reevaluate your goals, and prioritize your day effectively, allowing you to lead your life with purpose and clarity.
Clarify Your Vision: It’s essential to have a vision that excites you; otherwise, it’s easy to get bogged down in the day-to-day grind.” Reflecting on your vision can reignite your passion and provide clarity in your decision-making.
Take some time to reflect on your vision as a leader and a mother. What impact do you want to make in your business and life?
Identify Your Values: Regularly revisit your value system. Ask yourself: What principles guide my decisions and actions?
For me, values like freedom, honesty, integrity, and loyalty shape how I interact with clients and loved ones.
By identifying your values, you create a solid foundation for making choices that resonate with who you are. I once had a coaching session with a client who was feeling overwhelmed by conflicting priorities. When she prioritized her values, she felt more empowered to say no to what didn’t serve her.
Reevaluate Your Goals: Take a moment to assess whether your goals are driven by your aspirations or by external expectations. Are your goals driven by your aspirations or by external expectations?
Set goals that resonate with your vision and values, allowing them to guide your daily actions.
Prioritize Your Day: Intentionality requires us to be mindful of how we spend our time. Prioritize tasks that align with your goals and values, and consider the bigger picture before reacting to immediate demands.
A strategy I use to prioritize my day includes starting with three core tasks that align with my larger goals and values. This simple practice has transformed my productivity.
By focusing on what truly matters, you can break free from the reactive cycle and lead your day with intention, fostering a sense of accomplishment and peace.
