I LOVE, like all caps, LOVE structure. It's really interesting because many people resist structure, thinking it limits flexibility. However, I attribute my freedom and flexibility to the structure I’ve built. I frequently get questions about my routines, habits, and structure, which makes me reflect on how these elements shape my life.
For me, operating with structure is second nature; it's part of my identity and fulfillment. But many of my clients wonder how I manage to balance marriage, care for three small children, serve my clients, grow my business, and lead my team. My answer always comes back to the same thing; taking care of myself FIRST.
As women, we know logically what we need to do, but implementing it can be challenging, especially when overwhelmed with business demands. So, I’m here to share the personal routines that set me up for success.
The Foundation of Structure
I want to clarify that this is not about fostering comparison. Structure is essential for those juggling motherhood and business to give you dedicated space for all the things that matter to you. Let's dive into my routines and how you can build your own.
Understanding the importance of why we do things is crucial. As business owners, we understand our impact, vision, and why. But showing up for ourselves is where it gets tricky. It’s easy to prioritize work over self-care. That’s where routines and structure come in.
Routines alleviate stress and overwhelm by giving each part of our lives a dedicated space. Overwhelm often comes from overlap, and as moms and business owners, we experience a lot of overlap. Structure allows us to focus better, perform better in our roles, and be better leaders. It also protects boundaries, alleviating resentment and frustration.
For example, moving to a four-day workweek means you can set clear boundaries around your workdays and off-days. Structure provides a reason and a rule to follow, which ties directly to freedom and flexibility. When everything has a dedicated space, we ensure everything is attended to, which pleases us emotionally and gives us the freedom to adjust as needed.
The Morning Routine
I start my day early, between 5 and 5:30 AM, to set the tone for the day by serving myself first. This time is uninterrupted and dedicated to my mental and physical health. Here’s what my morning looks like:
Journaling: I’ve journaled for years, and my practice varies from gratitude lists to creative ideas. Gratitude is a constant because it keeps me grounded.
Reading: I read personal or business development books daily. Learning and evolving are essential to being a better leader for my family, team, and clients.
Movement: I work out daily, typically strength-based workouts, because consistent exercise sustains my energy levels and mental clarity.
The Night Routine
Evening routines are just as crucial. We have a structured family routine to create a sense of safety and predictability for our children. Here's what our evenings look like:
Family Dinner: We eat dinner as a family at 5:30 PM.
Post-Dinner Walk: We take a walk around the block to unwind.
Bedtime Routine for Kids: The kids take showers, brush their teeth, and we read books before bed. We recently added a five-minute meditation, which helps them settle and it’s teaching them an important skill (and us too!).
Our kids are in their rooms by 7 PM, providing Eric and me with time to connect. We might watch a show, chat, or send each other funny reels.
But most importantly, we have a weekly check-in to ensure we’re on the same page and keeping our marriage and connection as a priority.
We’re in bed by 9 PM, with screens off by 8:30. Sleep is foundational for emotional regulation and overall function. Prioritizing sleep ensures we’re at our best for our family and business.
