Most people think they want change, but what they don’t realize is that change takes more than just a desire…
It takes repetition, consistency, and the ability to lean into discomfort.
We're not naturally built for change; Our brains are hardwired to repeat what we know because it's safe and familiar.
If you’re a busy, seasoned mom entrepreneur, like many of my clients, you know the feeling of wanting to create change in your business or personal life but ending up stuck in the same place over and over. It’s that frustrating cycle of craving a different outcome, seeing some temporary improvement, but always finding yourself right back where you started.
So, how do we break the cycle and create long-term, sustainable change?
It comes down to three key areas: awareness, habit building, and leaning into discomfort. Let’s break each of these down.
1. Awareness: Recognizing the Need for Change
Awareness is the first step toward change – It’s the moment you acknowledge that change is needed. Recognizing that something isn’t working is key.
Maybe you’re feeling overwhelmed because your schedule is overloaded. You might be noticing that your business is consuming all your time, leaving little room for self-care or family.
But remember: Awareness alone doesn’t create change. It only shows you that change is needed.
For one of my clients, awareness meant realizing that by filling her schedule past capacity, she was putting her own basic needs, desires, and well-being on the back burner. Awareness gave her clarity, but it didn’t solve her problem.
Think of awareness as your starting point. You become conscious of the fact that you’re stuck in a cycle, but requires taking action to create change.
2. Habit Building: Turning Awareness into Action
Once you’re aware of the problem, the next step is building habits to address it. Awareness tells you something needs to shift, but change only happens through consistent action.
That’s where habit building comes in. And there are two steps to building a habit that shifts your brain to change the way you do things.
Be Consistent
One of the biggest reasons we fail to see lasting change is because we stop being consistent. Without repetition, habits don’t form, and the cycle continues.
Take small, consistent actions.
“Our brains thrive on repetition. If you’ve ever tried forming a new habit, you know that it takes consistent practice for it to stick.”
For instance, if you’re trying to find more balance, start by blocking out specific times in your calendar for self-care and family activities. Stick to these blocks as you would a work meeting.
Over time, these actions will become a natural part of your routine.
Become What You Say and Do
But more than that, real change happens when you integrate the habit into your identity.
Instead of saying, “I like to run,” shift to, “I am a runner.” This small language change signals to your brain that this new habit is part of who you are. It raises the standard of how you see yourself and creates internal accountability.
3. Leaning into Discomfort: Embracing the Growth Process
The hardest part of change is leaning into discomfort.
It’s natural to want to retreat when things get uncomfortable, but that’s where real growth happens.
One of my clients was afraid to set boundaries because she feared it might drive her clients away, but that’s exactly WHY she needed to do it. She had to learn that trusting herself and leaning into that discomfort would build a sense of certainty and confidence over time.
And it turns out, her clients trusted her too.
Trust that facing discomfort will lead to positive changes.
A powerful way to ease into discomfort is by starting with an area of your life where you already know the reward on the other side. If you’re used to pushing through discomfort in fitness, for example, apply that same determination to your business.
