Professional Woman

What do you say when someone says, “Tell me about yourself.”

Chances are, you lead with external things – your business, your work, your children.

And while those things are a part of you, they are not you. If your identity is completely wrapped up in your work and your roles, it’s a sign that you may have lost yourself along the way.

It’s so easy to lose yourself in the titles we take on, of "mom," as a CEO, through your relationships, through giving and caring for everyone around you, to become disconnected from who you truly are.

I’ve been there, and I’ve worked with so many women who have felt the same way.

If you’re feeling buried in the titles you wear and want to bring YOU back into your life,  without having to feel guilty about choosing one role over another, read on to see the signs and how to start intentionally reclaiming your identity and build a Life-First Business.

Our identity is how we see ourselves.

And so often, we distort those lenses over time, changing them and altering them to make sure that we are perceived in the right way by everybody else. It becomes about being who we need to be in order to make everybody else happy.

But you didn’t build the business to lose yourself.

You built it with freedom and flexibility and happiness and joy in mind.

Your intention was to make a good living that could support you and your family and the lifestyle that you want.

Your intention was to be able to fully live and experience life, to be able to travel, to be able to feel unrestricted financially.

Your intention was to make a difference with your work by filling a gap, by solving a problem you experienced or you saw was happening in our world and you raised your hand and said, “I want to change this.”

But society sets us up for this. We are constantly rewarded for external achievements—how much money we make, how many people we serve, what we build.

We rarely see celebrations of fulfillment, joy, and inner peace.

5 Signs You Need to Reconnect with Yourself

If you've been feeling one of these 5 things, it's a sign you need to reconnect with yourself:

  1. When asked what excites you, your only answer revolves around work. If you can't think about what really lights you up and excites you outside of new opportunities that are related to your business or your success, this is a key indicator that we need to find you again.

  1. You don’t have hobbies or interests outside of your business.Your social life is mostly tied to work-related events.

  1. The titles you wear are typically tied to your personal or professional responsibilities - like mom, business owner, wife, etc.

  1. You can only think as far ahead as your next deadline. The majority of your time and your energy is going towards and focused on the next launch, the next release, the next achievement, the next milestone, the next deadline.

  1. You are waking up and every day just going through the motions of checking the boxes of that day and working towards whatever initiatives or projects you have going on. Anything outside of that seems fuzzy, or there is very little happening beyond this.

How to Reclaim Yourself Again as A Business Owner

As business owners, we are always physically there, but mentally somewhere else.

I'm reading a book right now called Undistracted by Bob Goff, and one line really struck me: “Proximity doesn’t mean presence.”

A client once told me she felt guilty when she was working because she was spending time away from her family and guilty when she was with her family because there was always so much to do in the business.

Isn’t that the catch-22 we find ourselves in?

We get so caught up thinking that once we hit a certain milestone, that will finally allow us to exhale and enjoy.

But here’s the thing: external success means nothing if you don’t feel alive and in love with your life right now.

The Life-First Business Method

As someone who wasted 10 years of my life, I don’t want people to get to the end of their days and regret how much time they spent working and how little time they spent being present. I also don’t want them to regret not going after their dreams.

So my question has always been: How do we do both?

That’s why I built the Life-First Business Method.

You are allowed to have both. You should have both. And you can have both.

The key is to become more intentional.

3 Questions to Ask Yourself

In order to reclaim what you’ve sacrificed, I want you to answer these questions. Pause, grab a piece of paper, or come back to this when you can sit with it.

  1. What part of yourself have you been missing?

Think back to the last time you felt truly present. The last time you weren’t rushed, overwhelmed, or carrying the weight of urgent tasks. What were you doing? What made you feel light, fulfilled, and whole? What is missing from your life right now?

  1. What is something you used to do just for fun that has disappeared?

As business owners, we feel like we shouldn’t spend time on things that aren’t productive. We tell ourselves that hobbies are a waste of time. But when did we decide that happiness wasn’t worthwhile? What’s something you once loved but pushed aside because life got too busy?

  1. When was the last time you felt like yourself?

Was it before business? Before motherhood? Before both? What did life look like when you felt like the fullest version of you? And how can you bring that feeling back?
